 1.  Why do I need a comprehensive eye examination?

We hear this question often, especially from those individuals who have never required vision correction before. Put simply, our eyes are the window to the body. Through the eyes doctors can tell a lot about an individual.

At one time or another, most people have had a simple eye screening, either when renewing their driver’s license or when visiting their family doctor’s office, where they simply read an eye chart. However, a comprehensive eye examination measures many other factors that affect visual proficiency. It also enables the doctor to get an invaluable look inside the eyes which can alert the doctor to such diseases as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and several other systemic disorders.

Finally, the best way to prevent potentially sight-threatening diseases such as glaucoma is through routine eye care.

 3.  How do you treat my infant or toddler?

While many parents are concerned that their children will not be able to have their eyes examined if they cannot read a chart, we employ several age-appropriate examination techniques.  And whether or not a child can respond to an eye chart does not affect the results.

As a matter of fact, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that all children have their first eye examination by age 6 months.  Identifying sight-threatening diseases such as amblyopia at early age can eliminate a lifetime of vision difficulties.  Also, there are some eye diseases, such as retinoblastoma, that can be life threatening if not diagnosed in a timely fashion.
