At Guilford Eye Center, we are passionate about helping you achieve better eyesight through high-quality eye care. Apart from contact lenses and eyeglasses, we also provide LASIK eye surgery screenings. This can help us determine if you’re a good candidate for this procedure.
Here are four basic criteria you need to meet:
-
At Least 18 Years Old
According to the the Food and Drug Administration, LASIK has not been approved for individuals under 18 years. If you’re under 18, we may recommend other equally effective alternatives.
-
Good Visual Health
The next thing we may check is your current visual health. For one, your visual acuity must have remained the same for at least one whole year prior to the LASIK eye surgery. You must also not have active eye infections, allergies and other eye irritations. Underlying and uncontrolled eye conditions are considered contraindications as well.
-
Corneal Depth Is Adequate
Keep in mind that most refractive errors develop because of corneal infirmities. In LASIK, we’ll create a flap on your corneal surface to modify the tissues underneath, resulting in even refraction of light and correct focusing. This is why having sufficient corneal depth, which is around 0.55 mm thick, is essential. Failure to create a corneal flap may adversely affect the procedure’s outcome.
-
Stable Overall Condition
Your overall well-being is another important factor to consider. Having pre-existing conditions, especially if unmanaged, may compromise your healing and recovery period. This can also have an impact on the surgery’s effectiveness. Your trusted eye care center may suggest treating these illnesses first before proceeding with your laser eye surgery. Doing so can greatly reduce your risk of having postoperative complications.
The most reliable way to know if you’re qualified to undergo LASIK is to have yourself examined by an expert eye doctor. Call us today at (336) 387-6777, or complete our form to request an appointment. We provide eye care to patients from High Point and the surrounding North Carolina areas.
