Eyeglasses are available in a wide range of styles and materials. While you are probably most concerned about what frame style best suits your face, make sure to consider the frame material as well when you are shopping for new specs. Guilford Eye Center discusses some of the most popular eyeglass frame materials below:

Plastic
The most common types of plastic that are used in making eyeglass frames are zyl and propionate. Zyl, also referred to as cellulose acetate, is the most widely used for plastic frames. Propionate is slightly less popular than zyl, but you should opt for this type of frame material if you need your eyeglass frame to be hypoallergenic.
Stainless Steel
If you want a frame material that’s sturdier than plastic, your eye doctor might recommend frames made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is durable, hypoallergenic and non-corrosive. Although it’s not as lightweight as other eyeglass frame materials, stainless steel can be shaped into thin eyewear frames to add comfort to eyeglass wearers.
Titanium
You’ll mostly find titanium frames in designer glasses. The material is of premium quality, so it costs significantly more than other frame materials. If you prefer a cheaper alternative, you can opt for titanium alloy instead. This is basically a combination of titanium and other metals. Titanium frames are typically strong, lightweight, hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant.
Aluminum
When mixed with small amounts of alloys, aluminum can have the strength of steel while also being lightweight. It’s recyclable and soft enough to be sculpted.
